Safmarine to Launch Far East-Africa Service

Aug 4 -- Direct service to South and West Africa to start Aug. 12
Safmarine will add a direct container service between the Far East and West Africa via South Africa on Aug. 12. The FEW3 service will be operated jointly with parent company Maersk Line.

The service will strengthen Safmarine's other two Far East-West Africa services, said Dirk Geens, Safmarine's Africa trade director.

FEW3 will significantly improve transit times to Pointe Noire, Congo, and Matadi, DRC, through a direct call to Pointe Noire, the company said in a statement.

The new service will make a direct call at Tin Can Island in Nigeria, which will be phased out of the FEW 1 port rotation. The full capacity of the FEW3 service will call Lome, Togo, and Cotonou, Benin.

The FEW3 service's call in Durban will also be used to offer additional space to Safmarine's Southern Africa customers during the traditionally high volume peak months.

The number and size of vessels to be deployed on the FEW3 service has yet to be announced, but, subject to a variety of operational considerations, the port rotation is expected to be: Shanghai, Yantian, Nansha, Tanjung Pelepas, Durban, Pointe Noire, Tin Can Island, Durban, Shanghai.

FEW1 service port rotation without Tin Can Island will be Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha, Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelepas, Lome, Cotonou.
